Before And After: Living Room

December 4, 2014

It’s time for another round of before and after photos from our new-ish house. I can’t believe we have already lived here for 3 months — every day it is starting to feel more and more like home and dare I even say I am starting to truly love it. I think Christmas trees have a lot to do with that but whatever, I’ll take it. While we still have many projects that need completed [say for instance, installing doorknobs on all of our interior doors, nbd] it is finally feeling like it is almost out of the renovation stage. The living room was actually the first room we tackled when moving in as I had to have one room that we could actually sit down in and floors that we could actually see [do you know how unappealing to the eye construction paper is?] I love that this livinv room has a very Florida-like condo feel to it. It is light, bright, airy, and equally cozy at the same time.

Before I get too much into it, lets start with the before photos so you can see what we were working with.

As you can see, it was very white. White walls, white ceiling, white carpet, blah blah blah. Thankfully the real wood burning fireplace and seven large windows that flood the room with sunlight during the day made me look past the work that was going to have to go down to bring this space up to our liking. Here she is today with a little more color, texture, and spice to it.

The very first thing we did was cover up the retro painted ceiling with pine wood planks. We did this to the whole main level [minus bedrooms and bathrooms] which I believe ended up to be around 450 individual boards which is also equivalent to around 40-50 hours of labor. Originally the plan was to paint the planks all white however after we hung them, we fell in love with their natural color and decided to leave it. I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out! The next thing we did was tear out the carpet and floorboard trim and had all new hardwood floors and baseboard trim installed.

Next up we decided to have overhead lights installed [literally this house had basically zero overhead lights when we moved in, WTF]. We now have six dimmable LED lights in here and oh my word, they have made such a huge difference in the look and feel of the room. We also decided to hang a fan in the back portion of the room as you can see.

The other major changes also include installing crown molding and then of course, painting the walls. We went with Sherwin Williams Mint Condition. I went with navy, coral, and shades of gold for accent colors to bring in little pops of color and fun to the room.

We then made a little gallery wall of sorts with a few of our favorite signs, pictures, words, etc. I love the eclectic personal feel that this wall has.
All in all I love how the living room has turned out and look forward to the memories that will be created in it.
