It’s a question I hear time and time again.
Or maybe it’s just a question that I expect people are asking secretly in their own brains time and time again. Regardless, I assume it’s either being asked or it’s being thought about..
Can you actually make an earnest income from blogging?
Today, I’d love to dive into this topic.
Before we begin I want to make one thing very clear… you do not need to make a dime off of your blog to be a successful blogger. Some of the most admired bloggers are the ones who have zero sidebar ads, they aren't constantly having “guest posts”, and they are never seen wearing a product for a certain shop.
Making money from your blog is not what will make you a successful blogger.
Now that we have that understood, let’s look at the reverse side of things.
It may be a goal of yours to someday make money off of your blog, you may already be making money off your blog, or you may be in limbo asking yourself “is it even okay for me to make money off my blog?!”
I think that’s a question only women ask ourselves. I mean seriously, do guys ever sit around and ask themselves "Is it actually okay to treat this thing like a business and be paid for the time we are investing?!"
We girls have to justify EVERYTHING, amen?
I have been in all three stages over the past two years.
I have been in all three stages over the past two years.
I will always remember when I first heard about blogs.
It was Little Miss Momma and my sister was telling me about her…aside from our adoration for the girl in general, we noticed that she was generating revenue from her hobby.
We both were a little intrigued. Being the bearer of all potential income producing ideas I went to my husband and I said “So this is crazy. People are like writing these blogs about ANYTHING and then they are making money off of them. Isn’t that nuts?!!” This was my husband’s response:
“Yeah but those bloggers actually have people reading them. That could be a problem for you.”
And so it began.
I started a blog the next day. Not to make money…but just to prove to my husband that I could get people to actually read it danggit. About six months in (and a few hundred readers later) I started to ask myself those questions about making money off this new time consuming hobby of mine. You know the ones “Is it wrong to make money from a blog?” “Will that make my readers think it’s just about money?” "I mean how do you actually make money from blogging?"
This is where the exciting part comes in.
There are really an unlimited number of ways you can earn money through blogging.
It’s a lot more than sidebar ads people.
The following are ways that I am currently generating income from my blog, but please keep in mind there are SEVERAL other ways to generate income that I have yet to dive into.
Also, keep in my mind that no two bloggers are the same—some will make less, some will make more, some will make it one way, while others will make it another way. You just have to find what works best for you.
Sidebar ads/featured posts: $800-$1200/month
Google Adsense: $100-$150/month
Product reviews through Pollinate Media: $100-$200/month
Blog Consultation: $50-$200/month
Product received to wear: $50-$150/month
Other minimal sources of income I receive come from using Affiliate Links through rewardStyle and Amazon.
For a complete list of ways bloggers can earn an income, see here.
E-books, Conferences, Niche Blogs..the possibilities are endless (isn't that beyond exciting?! I freak out over this stuff). While you are on ProBlogger, spend time there. The wealth of knowledge on there is plentiful.
It is very important to keep four things in mind when it comes to making money off your blog.
1. It doesn't happen over night. I started slow. I was thrilled to make $50 for a few months. It took over a year to make at least $500 a month, and almost two years to start generating $1,000+ monthly.
The more time you spend focusing on your content, engaging readers, building your readership, developing genuine relationships...the more likely your income will increase. Have patience.
2. Measure the time you are investing vs the income you are receiving. Because I work a 40 hour job, I don't expect to make a 40 hour/week income from my blog. I personally spend around 20 hours a week on blogging (give or take some weeks). I do put in full 8, 10, 12 hour days occasionally on the weekends for blogging. I want to make sure that my income is comparable to my time. Hopefully this makes sense.
3. It takes money to make money. You better believe I put a portion of my income back into blogging (this is done through sponsoring other blogs, participating in giveaways, paying for a virtual assistant, etc). You also better believe that I invested money into my blog/sponsorship before I started making money myself. At the beginning, every dollar that I made I invested right back into my blog. Sponsorship is not "buying readers" in my opinion. It is marketing wisely. Without advertising your growth rate will probably be more stagnant compared to somebody who is continually getting their blog out in front of new audiences.
If you want to make money, you are most likely going to have to spend money.
4. With anything, I say experiment with things. Try out sidebar ads, sign up with BlogHer, reposition your Google AdSense ads, sign up with an affiliate program. If you are interested..try it. But then make sure once you try it, you gauge it's success. It's okay to admit something isn't working for you. And maybe it will be wildly successful for you. You never know til' you try.
I would love to make this post an "open forum" through the comments section with questions, pieces of advice for what's worked for you, what hasn't worked for you, etc. So please feel free to use it to your advantage, others advantage...The best part of blogging in my book? Learning from one another.
I do not know much but I promise to share with you what I have learned. It's just more fun that way.
Also, I know several of you have asked questions about how to deal with taxes and blogging. Heather over at JustLove.ly has written a beneficial post on this topic. I would encourage you to check that out!
excuse the profanity. not my first choice of words, however i think the point is pretty dead on.

This post is really helpful Erin. I have made very little blogging but I have decided I'm okay with it, but certainly not against it if the cash starts flowing in! ;) I would be interested to know how many page views/month you have to make that income from Google.
ReplyDeletePS your post about your dad having your sister's breast milk in his mouth? epic!
I am so glad you appreciated the time my dad had his daughters breast milk in his mouth. I am sure he appreciates it as well ;)
DeleteAs far as Google AdSense goes..I average around 1,700-2,700 page views a day. It took about a year and a half to consistently see a monthly income from that (they pay out in $100 increments).
Thanks for your question love! xoxo
Thank you so much for this post! I am so bookmarking this!

Very nicely written Erin!
ReplyDeleteI've realized the more money I make on my blog, the more I spend on it to try to make it better... It's kind of an obsession. Or maybe passion is a better word?
passion. obsession. it's all kinda the same ;)
DeleteThis is great info for someone like me who is looking to grow her blog, but stay authentic. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI definitely think curating good content and building relationships is the number 1 way to get started earning money. If no one will read your blog, no one is going to click on your ads either.
ReplyDeleteI also think that sponsorship with giveaways has been the best use of my money. Yes, you get people who only add you to get a giveaway entry, but you also get a lot of people who stick around. I think if you look at your blog as a business, and plan accordingly, you can really measure how much your putting in and getting out. At first all of my sponsorship money went straight into other ads. I've laid off on that for now, but it helped a lot to get myself out there and get people reading my blog. (Of course, having a spot here at LIY helped a TON!)
I spent a lot of time researching ad networks to find one that worked best for me. I did better with networks that paid per page view and not per click, and some affiliate networks over others. But like you said, if you track it then it doesn't hurt to try a variety of methods and ditch the ones that don't work - or be amazed by the ones that do!
Great feedback! I am curious--what affiliate networks pay per page views vs clicks? I have been trying to research that so any recommendations would be great!
DeleteAlso...great point about giveaway readers. I used to be leery of entering giveaways because I didn't want a follower who was just following for the sake of winning a prize. However, a percentage of those followers WILL keep coming back.
Great advice girl--thanks!
This is a great post! Thank you for sharing :D
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered this myself but have been too intimated to ask a "big" blogger since I'm a "small" blogger. Plus, I just don't want to waste their time.
ReplyDeleteI do have a question about ads and I don't mean to sound crass. But, I've seen such varying prices that I sometimes wonder what the difference is. I mean, if two blogs are similar statistically and offer the same exposure social media wise, I wonder why one blog charges $30 more than the other one? How do bloggers determine the prices for their blogs?
I hope to one day be able to generate a good income with my blog and this post has definitely inspired me to not give up.
* intimidated not intimated.
DeleteYou don't sound crass at all! Speaking for myself personally, I base my ad prices on supply and demand. If I start booking out months in advance, that is a good indication I need to increase the price. With that said though, I want to make sure that my sponsors are seeing results worthy of the price paid (which will never happen 100% of the time). My husband always brings up a good point in regards to sponsorship--if you were going to personally get your blog in front of 2,000 readers through the mail, think how much that would cost (ie: $920). For me to pay $75 to be on a blog that would get me in front of 2,000 readers it is SO worth it.
DeleteGood luck girl, keep bloggin' on.
I would love to chime in here with you Erin! My personal opinion is that you need to value your own time while valuing your advertisers dollars. With that being said, you should charge based off a couple of factors:
Delete- is this your full time job? is it just a hobby? that right there is a huge question because then it tells you how much you need to work.
- how much time can you put out there for your advertisers while still creating great content for your own space?
- do you charge enough to value your space? if you are charging for less then a lunch or coffee then it means you aren't worth taking out to lunch or coffee- value yourself! whats the point of a $2 ad, either up the price or swap until you are ready to be more serious!
- if you are making it your full time job then please don't settle for less then what your states minimum wage is! put in the hours and get paid for it.
- value your advertisers! as a publisher you get to offer them something, but they are putting trust (& their hard earned $ in your hands) so only deliver what you can reasonably do and price it according to that!
- also as an advertiser dont forget that ALL those ads you purchase, giveaways you do etc. are write offs =)
Hope that helps! This is just a little advice we give over at pf to our users! xo
Thank you Erin and just.lovely.things! Now that I understand why prices vary so widely. It makes sense to charge more if blogging is full-time as opposed to it just being a hobby. Y'alls advice was definitely helpful!
DeleteAbsolutely love this post. I know you had a tough time trying to figure out how to write about it but Im sure I can speak for many bloggers, we are grateful for the feedback. It's also inspiring and motivating to know that there is a way to make an income whether it's $50/month or $5000/month. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you SO much for writing this! I've found myself in the should I/shouldn't I try to make money off my blog for the last few months. This is super helpful. :)
ReplyDelete♥
Thanks for the great advice Erin (as always). Right now I just blog for fun, but I'm saving all your tips for later!
ReplyDeletealways blog for fun..the day I stop blogging for fun is the day I quit. Yes the money is nice, but I wouldn't do this if I didn't love it.
DeleteThanks for reading :)
Great post!
ReplyDeleteI was selling ad space for a while, but I was putting in a lot of effort for a tiny, tiny bit of return. Seriously I was only charging like $10 for my most expensive ad and then I was using that money to pay for the giveaways I was hosting. So I decided to only offer swaps until I get to my goal as far as page views per day and followers. Right now I'm at about 400-500 views per day and 700+ followers and am considering selling ad space again. Any advice on how to put myself back out there? I hardly advertise on other blogs because I've been burned a few times too many so I guess I could start there.
I've also been hearing a lot about people making money with Pinterest. Have you tried that route yet? I'll have to check out Pollinate Media, I've never heard of that.
Reese
As far as putting yourself back out there--just go for it. Mention in a post that you are accepting sponsors again, make your price appealing, and see how it goes!
DeleteSorry to hear that you feel you have been burned on sponsoring other blogs. If a blogger doesn't do what they promise in their sponsor options, don't be afraid to say something and/or ask for a refund. However, if the blogger does everything they promise and you still don't see positive results, don't blame the blogger. You can't control what their readers engagement will be of you and your blog. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.
As far as making money from Pinterest--I haven't heard of ways to directly make money, however I could see how you could indirectly. I try to post as many of my posts as possible on Pinterest to increase my page views/readers. The higher those numbers, the more money I am likely to make. So I guess that's what I mean by indirectly. If anybody knows differently, please share :)
Good luck!!!
I have seen a lot of people pinning items (shoes, a bag, whatever) and having it link to the product page through their affiliate link, usually Rewards Style. I think that might be where the Pinterest profit plans in!
DeleteI'm pretty freakin happy that you decided to do this post! thankyou!
ReplyDeleteWow that is quite the income you make through blogging. I'm impressed. I can't imagine putting 20 hrs per week into my blog right now but if I had the time I would love to try to make some money at this hobby!
ReplyDeleteAhhh!!! SO excited you posted this. Now I'm off to go explore every link you included!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Erin!! I just recently started offering blog ads, but I don't seem to see anyone buying. What is your advice on enticing people to sponsor you?
ReplyDeleteAlli
Allena Mistral
If people aren't snatching them up--lower your prices or offer a sale. And maybe if they still don't, re-evaluate your options and/or if you are really ready to offer ads. When I first started I maybe had 5 sponsors.
DeleteAlso, I will say--if you can advertise that you are advertising with larger blogs, that will help. I have sponsored other blogs based on who they were sponsoring.
Good luck!
Thank you for this post! I'm brand spankin' new to blogging and it's nice to see what it can grow into! :)
ReplyDeleteI have seen other bloggers touch on earning an income through blogging but never as specific as you got. Love this post and that you were so open and honest on what works for you.
ReplyDeletethis is such a great post that is really informative. since i started blogging i've always been kind of blown away by how many people make money from their blog! it has always seemed like something that would be out of reach for me but this post makes it seem more possible. i'm definitely going to look into some of the things you mentioned .. thanks!!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Definitely a great guide for all bloggers. When I first started blogging I had high hopes of becoming an extremely successful blogger - because I thought I was just so awesome that people would immediately want to read what I had to say. But sadly, just being awesome isn't enough. Now I know that I also have to be awesome at showing people how awesome I am. If you want results, you gotta work for em and I'm still working on that...
ReplyDelete♥ Duckie.
Love this... something i've always been wondering! thanks i'm sure i will use it as a reference often :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post Erin!
ReplyDeleteQuestion, should I feel bad for rejecting ads that I don't feel mesh with my blog?? Is that rude and should I not do it and take whatever I can get? (please don't judge me, I really am I nice person)
Thanks,
Lauren
My Polished Side Blog
It absolutely does not make you rude--it makes you true to yourself. Your blog is a reflection of yourself--if you don't feel comfortable with having a blog or shop that you don't align well with, it can be a poor reflection of you. Keep staying true to you lady!
DeleteThis is a great post, Erin! I would love to one day be able to grow my small blog and make money off of it. Thanks for all of the great tips!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about this today!!! As a new blogger, I'm focusing on "the style" of my blog and buying sponsors that I relate to. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Erin! Thank you for answering one of the burning questions is small bloggers are always wondering! At the moment I am trying to build my blog, then I will start charging more for ads I think. I totally agree with you though don't blog just for the money you have to love your blog and what you write.
ReplyDeleteI just hit a milestone on my blog of 100,000 views which is probably tiny compared to most but I'm really happy :) I look forward to the next 9 months and see where that gets me :)
This is wonderful and filled with such great advice! Thanks Erin, its easy to see this is something you really love to do. I think the biggest piece of advice I could offer is to not compare/ get down on yourself while looking at other blogs. Stay true to yourself and your content, you can never go wrong.
ReplyDeleteMckennaBleu.blogspot.com
I don't intend to make money off my blog (I don't want to put in the effort) but this was still interesting. I definitely think it's great that bloggers can make money from their blogs- it is a lot of work they are putting in for my personal entertainment, and I'm not the one who has to pay! haha.
ReplyDeletep.s., i discovered your blog from a giveaway you did on casey wiegand's blog, and i've kept coming back! haha.
Erin! You are so awesome! {Of course, I know, you know this}
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, thank you so much for sharing this information. This is SUCH a wonderful post filled with great blogging advice. Most of all, thank you for being YOU and being authentic. It is TRULY refreshing in this big blog world to read such open and honest advice.
Love, love, love, your blog. Keep on keepin' on!
XOXO~
Amanda :)
I would have never imagined you could make that kind of money.....holy moley I could quit my day job for real! So my question....I have a teeny tiny almost non existent blog.....4 kiddos (baby is 5 months)...full time job.....hubby....house...etc.....I want a successful blog.....would you pay the money for a blog designer (gussy sews just posted about that) now or wait until you have more followers I only have a few? Also what is this virtual assistant?
ReplyDeleteHoly cow lady--you have to be busy.
DeleteI absolutely would pay money for a blog design. Your blogs appearance does play a large part in how "serious" people take your blog. What people see when they first land on your blog will decide a lot of things for the reader within seconds. Yes, the content will keep them around but the appearance has to draw them in to even read the content. Thats my advice!
The virtual assistant--I use Nicole at The Style Hatch and she puts together my group giveaway every month. I intend to have her do additional work but as of right now, that's all I really have her do. It just helps free up other time to work on other blogging things!
Erin, thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been wondering about this question for some time. I kept wondering what real people were doing. Before reading this, I was leery about spending my money to sponsor other blogs and getting my name out there. But now I realize that this is a business, and just like any other business, you have to advertise. This is exactly what I needed to read. Once again, thank you! I feel like I now have a good starting point.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for writing this post! It's a question I've been asking myself a lot lately. I keep thinking and wondering if it's something that I can actually make happen! I'm in the stage right now where if I bring in $25 a month from my blog- that's awesome! I've been wondering HOW exactly to go about finding more ways to make the blog profitable & bring in some extra money. I think you've suggested some fantastic ways to go about doing this & I really appreciate it! Thanks, Erin!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I'm still pretty new to all of this, and the whole ad/money making deal definitely gave me some questions. Thanks for the insight!
ReplyDeleteGood for you on making some money! Mo Money Mo Macaroni! :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the quote above. Oh how true. Thanks for excellent information, lady!
ReplyDeleteThis is great!
ReplyDeleteYou rock my socks off. I'm so inspired to get out there and make money ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are always so helpful! Thank you for the advice!!!! :D
ReplyDeleteloved everything about this post! thanks for all the advice! :)

ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant! Way to be honest and truly put it all out there! Thanks, lady!

This was super helpful! I have a question...I'm always amazed at how quickly some blogs just take off so quickly. I've blogged consistently for over 3 years now and in the last year I've decided I want to generate income from my blog. You mentioned within 6 months you had hundreds of followers...(it's taken me 3 years to get hundreds!) do you remember one or two things that really catapulted you to the next level?
ReplyDeleteGreat question Ruthy Ann.... I am curious about this as well. I'm always amazed by bloggers who say that within a year of blogging, they had over 1,000 followers (especially when some of them are not so great, in my opinion)(obviously Erin doesn't fall into that category). Would love any advice on how to catapult to the next level as well!
DeleteErin this was such a helpful post, thank you for continually sharing your bloggy wisdom with us all :)
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I would add to that is to also invest in making you blog "look appealing". Although the content needs to be good, how it is laid out is what sometimes catches the eye.
I'm glad you decided to post this- it's interesting to know what you've done to help make you such a large blog! I just did a happy dance a while ago because I got to double digits- and I've just only started investing in other blogs, but I enjoy it because it makes me feel more connected to the entire blogging world!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING post Erin. so helpful and honestly it's what we were all thinking. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this and being honest!! I think this is extrememly helpful! I don't think it is something people necessarily want to talk about but I'm glad you did.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. I am of the opinion that if you write what you love and put work into making that content good, you can get readers. I am still learning the SEO side of things, while balancing sharing enough and being private enough for my own comfort. I am a very closed blogger, in terms of how much I share about my personal life, and I think that can harm me long-term as a blogger. I have noticed the more successful (where that is a loaded word) bloggers are a little more open and personal, but also work very hard on creating a solid image, too.
ReplyDeleteI love this post and as a beginning blogger I am trying to figure out ways to grow my blog as well as not go broke doing it. I love all the tips you gave.
ReplyDeleteI have been reading blogs for about a year and have decided I really want to have one of my own in which I have people telling me things much like your husband told you, "what's the point, if you want to write why not just get a journal and write in that where you don't have to put it out for everyone to see?" To this I say, "Because I want to, I love writing, and getting to design it is a bonus. I also get to meet knew people and have a support system. But the biggest thing is because eventually everything will be done electronically I have a feeling and I want to be prepare!" :)
As for a question I had... What are some good E-Books or sources to help someone get started blogging in general?
I literally had no idea you could actually generate that much income from blogging! I've never really had the guts to ask someone too, so that's AMAZING that you posted this! I've been blogging for about 9 months and have only made $40 from google adsense, however I have been trying to do it without spending money, knowing that I need to spend it to make it :) Thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteAaaaaaaaand e-mailing you now.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to get started but don't know where to start! I'm stuck on the designing part and it's really discouraging. Any tips?

thank for all of this info! i've wondered- do you (and bloggers in general) charge to host a giveaway for a shop/business? and/or do you charge to review a product in addition to receiving the actual product for free?
ReplyDeleteand if yes to the above questions, what's a good price range?
Awesome post, Erin! I have a few questions for you and/or all the other bloggers here.
ReplyDelete1) Do you have any advice on how to think of things to blog about? I'm in a rut right now but a few weeks ago I was on fire!
2) Any advice on getting 500+ ppl to visit your blog everyday? I'm hovering around 200 consistently.
3) What's the deal w/ SEO? Any tips, info, tricks?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Thank you for being so transparent and sharing! This is HELPFUL! We are just getting started and will use this info if we ever get to that point (which would be super cool!!)

This blog post was really helpful. I have been looking for something like this for ever. It is perfect, everything I would ever need to know in one spot. Thanks a lot. Since my 2 yr blog b-day is coming up I have been wanting to dabble into the business aspect of it. And this is very valuable.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! This post was extremely helpful and very well written, too! I've recently started a blog through Blogger. I'm not as computer savvy as most bloggers but I'm trying! I hope eventually I will get some FOLLOWERS and my blog will be well known, and of course, a monthly income off of it wouldn't hurt. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm still working on my blog daily! I get a little discouraged every now and then because I'm not sure who's reading it or even cares, but I WON'T GIVE UP!

I guess I am a little weird. Right now I am not worrying about marketing-just getting content up there on my site. After the site has about 1 year's worth of posts, I'll scale back from daily posts to 3x a week for the posts so I can focus a little more on marketing. I think this helps to ensure that there is enough there that potential readers have options as to what they want to read. http://michaeldcarroll.info

Your post has great information about blogging ...
ReplyDeleteMaking money blogging has been one of the best sources of passive income that only a minority has experienced. I am blessed to be part of that minority because of the training I got from Vick Strizheus who has taught me how to make money online. Because of his training, Imade $4,825 in just over a month with Big Idea Mastermind. Hope you can also find such success when you join part of his team.
